We know. We’re rarely your favorite people to see, but at Austin Family Dental, we’re always happy to be here for you. If dental visits make you a little nervous (or as scared as you’d be if a pack of bears were chasing you), it’s OK. You’re not alone. But don’t avoid dental trips all together. Instead, try some of our best tips for tackling your fear and getting comfortable in that funny shaped dental chair. It really is a pretty comfy spot….

Tip #1

Talk to Your Dentist

It’s not admitting weakness, nor should you be embarrassed by letting us, or any dentist you see, know that dental visits make you a teeny bit nervous. We will take the time to explain every procedure to you, step by step, if that eases your mind. We can also slow our pace, allowing you time to process each part. And if your fear is very severe, there are short-acting medications that can help get you through it. Talk to us about your options.

Tip #2

Build a Relationship

Choose a dentist that makes you comfortable. If you don’t feel at ease with the dentist, it certainly won’t help you settle down in the chair. Here at Austin Family Dental we build relationships with our patients that last for years. Please call us with any questions you have. We promise we won’t think they are silly! You can also come visit before your actual visit if it helps; we find this especially beneficial with children.

Tip #3

Try Calming Techniques

Many patients meditate for a few minutes before coming into the office. Others practice deep breathing in the waiting room and prior to procedures. Still others close their eyes, put in headphones and chill out to their favorite music or mediation tracks the entire time, never hearing the whir of the drill. We will make every accommodation feasible to help you relax.

Tip #4

Establish a Signal to Stop

Knowing that you’re in control can bring you peace of mind. Before the procedure starts, set up a stop signal with your dentist. Raising your hand is a great sign to choose — easy to see and very obvious. It’s comforting to know you can send up a flag when something is bothering you or you just need a break.

At Austin Family Dental, your comfort is our priority. We will partner with you to make each visit a positive experience. Give us a call today to take the first step toward building our relationship!
