What are dental crowns and will my tooth need a crown?
Dental crowns are artificial replacement teeth. The crowns are used to replace a missing tooth, cover and support a tooth, or reshape a tooth. They are permanently cemented on to a tooth and restore a tooth back to its original function and appearance.
Crowns are used to cover, protect and strengthen broken teeth that have been weakened by decay, have large fillings, cracks, root canals, have been injured, or to improve the appearance of the original teeth.
Dental crowns can be used to reshape a tooth and improve a tooth's appearance. Doing this may also reduce a food trap which will improve gum health.
Crowns can be used to replace missing teeth by being placed on top of dental implants or by being attached to a dental bridge.
A great fitting crown, veneer, or bridge is first crafted by an experienced dentist that understands the proper technique.
Labs are than used to make custom fit and natural looking replacement teeth.

Dental Crown Materials
The material being used depends on where the dental crown is located in the mouth, what look the patient is going for, and if the individual has a metal allergy. Dental crowns can be made of ceramic, gold, porcelain fused to metal, and base metal alloys.
Porcelain or Ceramic Dental Crown
- Works well if you have a metal allergy
- Match your natural tooth shade
- Have a natural tooth like appearance
Gold Dental Crown
- Less irritating to gums then any of the other materials
- Minimal wear to opposing teeth
- Primarily used on back molars because these crowns are gold in color
- Known to inhibit future decay because of the antimicrobial properties of gold
Porcelain Fused to Metal Dental Crown
- Can irritate your gums if you have a metal allergy, but are strong and can match your natural tooth shade
- Can have a natural tooth like appearance but metal may start appearing around the edges once your gums shrink back. This will leave a dark edge around the crown that may look like decay
- May chip due to differences in thermal expansion; porcelain and metal expand and contract at different rates when there is a change in temperature. For example, when you drink a cold soda and have hot soup
- May chip due to an incorrect chemical or mechanical bond of the porcelain to the metal
