Teeth Cleaning : Austin Family Dental

What is a Dental Cleaning?

  • A dental cleaning is the removal of stains, plaque, and tartar from the teeth.
  • Cleaning your teeth helps prevent you from getting gum disease and cavities.
  • The bone level is also checked that holds your teeth in places this is called the periodontal pocket.

Children's first visit

Children can be seen by the dentist for a check-up as early as their first birthday.  We recommend that all children be seen by at least their third birthday for a ride in the dental chair.

Not all children are ready to have their teeth cleaned at the first visit, this is normal.  Getting them introduced to the atmosphere is important and seeing their siblings, parents, and other people having a happy time in the dental office is important to create a positive experience.

Adults and children

We recommend adults and children be seen by a dentist and hygienist for preventative treatment such as cleanings, exams, fluoride, and x-rays every twelve months.  Some individuals may need to come in more frequently for cleanings.

What is Dental Fluoride?

  • Fluoride is the negative ion of the element fluorine.
  • Fluorine is the most electronegative element on the periodic table.
Why does fluoride help prevent decay?
  • Fluoride can help rebuild tooth structures that are weakened by early decay.
  • It can also help protect your teeth if you have a lot of restorations such as fillings and crowns which are prone to decay around the seams.
  • Fluoride also interferes with the bacteria that cause dental cavities.
  • Fluoride can help desensitize your teeth.
You can get fluoride from the following sources at a dental office
  • prescription strength fluoride toothpaste
  • topical fluoride application
