Dentures : Austin Family Dental

A denture is a removable oral prosthesis and used to replace all of your teeth on your upper or lower jaw if they are missing.

This helps with chewing, creates a balanced bite and helps create a smile.
Dr. Austin uses local labs to craft his dentures.

How Are Dentures Made?

  • Diagnosing if dentures are the best solution
    • The dentist will examine your gums and other remaining teeth to determine if dentures are the best solution for you and if so, what type.
    • A mold will then be taken of your teeth and gums so that custom trays can be created in a dental lab
    • The custom trays allow for a better and more precise fitting denture then a standard stock tray.  This accuracy is important to help create a better fitting denture

  • Impression appointment

    • Impressions are taken in the custom tray and sent to the dental lab to have a wax rim made.
    • Wax rims are used by the dentist to record your proper bite and midline.
    • Tooth and gum shade are selected to be set in wax.

  • Try - in

    • The dental lab sends the tooth shade in a wax modeled denture to try in.
    • If the wax denture feels and looks good, it is sent back to the lab to be processed.  If adjustments need to be made because it does not feel right or look right, additional appointments may be needed.

  • Denture is seated
    • The denture is finished and presented to the patient in a hard-acrylic base.
    • Small adjustments can be made to the base if necessary, by the dentist.
    • If any sore spots develop, you would return back to the dental office where the dentist would adjust this area.

Benefits of Dentures

  • Dentures replace all of your missing teeth and allow you to chew again and helps restore your smile. Whether you need a full or partial set, they can replace teeth in a non-invasive way. There is no surgical element.

Negatives of Dentures

  • The biggest challenge with dentures is that they do not feel like natural teeth.  Dentures also cover a large portion of your hard palate, which can be uncomfortable.  The hard palate also contains taste buds, so your taste is altered when you begin to wear a denture.

Many techniques have made dentures more secure and comfortable than they used to be, but they are still a foreign object in your mouth and can become loose when eating or speaking.  Patients tend to agree that while they are functional, you still have to clean them.
Alternative Options to Dentures
  • Overdentures are a procedure that combines dental implants with dentures.
  • Those that need complete dentures can benefit by having a secure way to hold their dentures in place.
How do I care for my dentures?
Every night you need to take your dentures out, do not allow them to air dry.

We advise patients to rinse them thoroughly, then use a denture brush to remove any food particles before rinsing them again. You also need to brush your gums, tongue, and the roof of your mouth with a soft toothbrush and toothpaste.

You can use an antiseptic mouthwash afterwards to kill any lingering bacteria and improve your breath.

Your dentures should soak all night, then be placed back in the mouth in the morning.
